- Notice was given that The British Post Office had issued a set of four stamps on February 18 to honor the comet. The designs, by Ralph Steadman, show Edmond Halley's face on the comet (17 pence); the European Space Agency's Giotto spacecraft speeding towards the comet (22 pence); the phrase "Maybe Twice in a Lifetime" (31 pence); and the comet orbiting around the sun (34 pence). - Another Coincidence in 1986?
- For maritime historian Alan B. Flanders, finding a rare copy of the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE in the library of a Portsmouth, VA home is the "peak" of his career. The 1823 document was discovered by the 38-year-old Portsmouth native while he was researching a book. It is one of fewer than 200 such copies in existence.
Of spcial interest to the Halley's Comet afficionados is that another paper Flanders found at the same time he came across the declaration "equals it in significance" in a different field. That document is a 1701 copy of EDMOND HALLEY'S chart of celestial navigation. (Reported in USA TODAY, June 17, 1986).

- This was an announcement of a liquidation sale of Halley's Comet souvenirs at greatly reduced prices, including a "grab bag" offer which included T-shirts, stickers, pins, buttons, books, coins, tapes, etc. to pass on to children and grandchildren for 2061 and for personal Halley's Comet Time Capsules.
- Ad for "Comet Enriched" Long Grain Rice
- Reference was made to a product which was being offered in grocery stores in 1986: COMET ENRICHED LONG GRAIN RICE.
It was an interesting marketing ploy that reminded the Editor of HCW of the April Fool's joke regarding a "Germination Disturbance" which was reported in the July, 1986 HCW Newsletter (Vol. 5, No. 4, p. 7) -- but this one was FOR REAL (the marketing, that is, not the "comet enrichment").
